The WindsorEssex Economic Development Corporation is proud to host its inaugural cross-border hackathon on September 25-27, 2020. BorderHacks will inspire tech talent locally to get involved in our technology community, ultimately contributing to unlocking the potential of our future programmers, hackers, and designers with a focus on mobility and cross-border issues such as healthcare, logistics, and cybersecurity.
This event will be completely hosted online! Over 400 students are expected to join us on this three-day event, where all participants will be given 36 hours to come up with their greatest hack. The theme for this hackathon is Mobility! Students are free to interpret the theme however they want.
Participants will be given the opportunity to come up with their greatest creation that will be later presented and judged by a panel of qualified adjudicators and win top tech and cash prizes to be announced!
FREE educational events such as workshops to help hone and adopt new skills in the field of computer science are also on the agenda. We believe that these activities will give contestants a taste of both entrepreneurship and a feel for the work environment that they will soon find themselves.

OneLedger - Tracking Car parts from Manufacturer to Consumer
We live in a world where everything can be dismantled very easily. This is especially true for the used car sales sector, where before you purchase a used car, there is a very high possibility that the car has changed hands many times. The more it changes hands, the more is the possibility of having some of the parts duplicated. This presents us with a need to create a decentralized trustless platform where the original manufacturer of the car can upload the information about the parts of the car, and an end-user can verify this information anytime in the life of a car.
AudaciaBioscience - Pilot for the Implementation of a Regional COVID-19 Status Certificate (5)
The aim of this challenge is to implement a secure ‘COVID-19 status certificate’ for citizens of Canada and USA who live in a border city. The solution will outline a diagnostic testing strategy to detect the presence or absence of the COVID19 virus (nasal, saliva) and antibodies (blood), and transfer the results to a secure portal.
St Clair College - Analysis and modeling of vehicle traffic along the Huron Church Road Corridor
Develop a solution to monitor the traffic travelling along the Huron Church Rd. corridor to determine the traffic patterns affecting the volume commercial and commuter vehicles, crossing the bridge and remaining in Windsor. From this data, develop a model to predict traffic patterns for time of day and when the border opens up to non-essential travel. Our first challenge is restricted to current students of St. Clair College or those that will be entering St. Clair College by Fall of 2021. We are awarding a $1000 tuition prize to each St. Clair participant of the winning team in our “Commercial Border Traffic” Challenge. (Please note there are no substitutions and tuition amounts are restricted to $1000 per winning participant. They cannot be combined or transferred). IBM has also graciously sponsored this challenge with a collection of cool IBM swag for your team.
WDBA - Ability to Keep Up with Traffic Growth
(This challenge is restricted to people in Ontario or attending Ontario schools remotely)
• Develop a plan to streamline automated truck platooning across the Gordie Howe International Bridge with a focus on boosting efficiency and cross-border trade.
• Take us through the steps that an automated truck platoon would take as it makes its way across the bridge (from origin to destination). Key considerations: Should the platoons make their way through a fully automated vehicle lane, at-speed border crossing or other means?
• Identify the technologies and mechanisms that would prevent automated truck platoons from being hacked or compromised by third parties.
St. Clair College - Mobility Marketplace Award
Help to shape the future of mobility in your community and develop a solution to address environmental issues and congestion on roadways by providing a marketplace to buy or sell transportation services for commuters.
